There are a limited number of situations in which your employer is allowed to dismiss you from your job.

These include misconduct, incapability and redundancy. In other circumstances you may have an employment tribunal claim for unfair dismissal.

If your employer wants to dismiss you, they must follow a minimum procedure under the law.  If they don’t, you may be able to bring a claim for unfair dismissal in an employment tribunal.

In some circumstance a dismissal will automatically be unfair. This may be the case if your employer dismisses you for trying to assert your rights, or if you are dismissed for reasons relating to pregnancy or maternity leave.
